After we bought a bottle of Cherry Heering to craft Singapore Sling cocktails, it wasn’t long until we used that bottle to craft Blood and Sand cocktails too. Doing so was a no-brainer – the deeply flavored cherry liqueur tastes so good and the cocktails we craft with it are even better.

Harry Craddock introduced the Blood and Sand to the world when he included the cocktail’s recipe in his iconic Savoy Cocktail Book in 1930. While cocktail lore doesn’t directly credit Craddock with its creation, it does attribute a specific movie for the cocktail’s inspiration.

That 1922 movie, Blood and Sand, was a truly international endeavor. Produced in Hollywood, the bullfighter-themed movie was based on a Spanish novel written by Vicente Ibáñez and starred the Italian actor and international heartthrob Rudolph Valentino.

The Blood and Sand cocktail is also international. However, unlike the movie, its key ingredients hail from Italy, Scandinavia and Scotland.

You need the following ingredients to craft a Blood and Sand cocktail at home:

  • Blended Scotch – We use Dewar’s White Label blended scotch whisky in this recipe. Produced in Scotland with up to 30 single malt and grain whiskies, the affordable scotch has an ABV of 40%. You could alternatively use another blended scotch like Monkey Shoulder or Johnnie Walker instead.
  • Cherry Heering – First concocted by the Danish Peter F. Heering company in 1818 and now produced in the Netherlands by De Kuyper, this sweet cherry liqueur has a 24% ABV.
  • Orange Juice – Using freshly squeezed orange juice is the way to go in this recipe.
  • Sweet Vermouth – We use Carpano Classico sweet vermouth in this cocktail. The Italian liquor has a secret recipe, a deep ruby shade and an ABV of 16%.
  • Orange Twist (garnish)
